FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS


PLANNING YOUR VISIT

  • The museum’s main hours are Tuesday-Friday from 11am-5pm, and Saturday from 12pm-5pm. The museum will occasionally stay open later into the evening for special events and programming.

    The museum is closed on Sundays, Mondays, major holidays, and any dates on which Daytona State College is closed. This includes all holiday breaks and all inclement weather closures. The museum may also close partially or fully when installing new exhibitions. For more information about museum closures, check out our Visit page.

  • The Southeast Museum of Photography is located on the main campus of Daytona State College. Our address is 1200 W International Speedway Blvd, Daytona Beach, FL.

    We are located inside of the Hosseini Center, in the left wing of the building, next to the Madorsky Theater. The Hosseini Center is Building 1200 on campus, across the street from Dunkin’ Donuts.

  • Yes! Museum entry is free to all visitors. Most programming and events are also free and open to the public, unless listed otherwise.

  • Visitors of any age are welcomed at the museum! We believe that art education can provide valuable enrichment to the young, old, and everyone in between.

  • The museum offers elevator access to our second floor gallery, as well as accessible restrooms.

    For accessibility questions and concerns, please email museum1@daytonastate.edu. We are always open to suggestions to make our spaces more accessible to all.

  • The museum is occasionally able to offer educational tours led by our senior staff. If you are interested in scheduling a tour, please call the front desk during museum hours (386-506-3894), or email museum1@daytonastate.edu.

    Due to limited staff at the museum, it is essential to schedule ahead if you would like a guided tour for a large group. We want to make sure we have the capacity to offer this service, so we can plan ahead to give you the best experience possible.

  • There is not a café inside of the Southeast Museum of Photography.

    We do share the Hosseini Center building with Café 101. Café 101 is a teaching and learning café and kitchen operated by Daytona State College culinary students, under the supervision of chef instructors.     There are many restaurants nearby throughout International Speedway Boulevard and in the surrounding areas. There is also a campus cafeteria located inside the L. Gale Lemerand Student Center.

  • Yes! Our Museum Store is located next to the reception desk area. We have many photography books available from current and past exhibitions, as well as various photography-related souvenirs and gifts.

    • Our space has undergone increased sanitation, with additional cleaning procedures in place.

    • Masks are optional.

    • We recommend that all visitors and/or groups adhere to social distancing of at least six feet from other parties during your visit.

PROGRAMMING AND EVENTS

  • The museum often hosts visiting artists, curators, and community members to give presentations in our galleries and in the Madorsky Theatre. Please visit our Events page for more information.

    We also occasionally offer hands-on workshops to facilitate photography and art education, which will be advertised via our website, social media, and email newsletter. Visit our Events page for more information.

    Additionally, we offer the Art In Action program from time to time. Art In Action is a series of creative workshops for veterans and their families. To learn more about Art In Action, please contact Christina Katsolis at Christina_katsolis@daytonastate.edu.

  • A list of upcoming events can be found on this page. Events that are specific to a given exhibition will also be linked on the exhibition’s main page. All public events will be announced via our mailing list and social media pages.

  • Select events may require online registration. This helps the museum keep track of attendance to continue receiving grants, which helps to improve the quantity and quality of our programs. Please visit this page for more information.

    For events that are expected to hit seating capacity, it will also guarantee your spot. Workshops may have a small capacity to ensure that there are enough supplies for all attendees, so registering in advance is essential!

  • Many exhibitions will have digital content linked on their main pages on our site. We also have a YouTube channel on which you can find video tours, interviews with artists, and more! Select events will also be live-streamed, and/or hosted as virtual Q&A sessions with an artist or curator. Live virtual events will be announced in advance via social media and via our mailing list.

  • Upcoming film showings will be listed on our Museum Events page here.

    Our ability to screen films is dependent on availability of the theater space, the generosity of filmmakers and studios granting us the rights to affordably screen their work, relevance to current exhibitions, and staff availability during evening hours. Please support our film screenings when they happen, so that we may provide more of this type of event to our community!

FOR STUDENTS AND FACULTY

  • The museum is happy to offer tours led by our staff, and to provide opportunities for docent tours. We are also able to schedule times for students to go on self-led tours during class time, or work in conjunction with provided class materials for students to visit on their own time.

    Per staff availability, students and faculty may also request to view works from the Southeast Museum of Photography’s extensive permanent collection for supervised physical study.

  • The museum exhibits the work of graduating Daytona State College and University of Central Florida students during the annual Thesis & Departures exhibition. Thesis & Departures begins near the end of every Spring semester, and lasts through most of the Summer semester. See our Exhibitions page for more info on Thesis & Departures 2024.

  • Thesis & Departures is an exhibition for graduating UCF and DSC photography students that is held every Spring semester. Recent graduates from the prior Fall semester are also eligible to participate.

    Students and alumni who are eligible to participate in Thesis & Departures will be notified by the museum early into each Spring semester, so it is important for students to check their school email for updates. If you believe you are eligible to participate and have not been notified, please reach out to us at museum1@daytonastate.edu.

  • The work study program is a paid opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience working at a museum. This position is perfect for students who have an interest in preparing and installing artwork, getting involved in art education and research, or engaging with the community.

  • Work study employees must be currently enrolled at Daytona State College. It is not required for applicants to major in photography, though a strong interest in photography or art is appreciated! For more information on eligibility requirements, visit this page.

  • The Gary R. Libby Curatorial Scholarship is an annual award of $500 to one Daytona State College student who participates in a semester-long internship to curate an exhibition, which will be displayed at the News Journal Center upon completion. This internship allows the chosen student to gain valuable experience planning, curating, installing, and marketing an exhibition, from pre-production through the opening reception held upon completion.

    The application period is typically held in the Fall semester, with the internship to be completed over the following Spring semester.

  • The museum library is closed to the public indefinitely at this time for reorganization of our print and literary resources.

We are occasionally able to accommodate private access to the library.
