Anil Purohit
Anil’s work spans Street and Documentary genre, exploring urban life in spaces traditional and modern, seeking interactions between fellow humans and with the spaces they inhabit and navigate in everyday life.
Based out of Mumbai, he explores urban spaces in the context of culture and history, the traditional and modern, all the while seeking to record the times we live in. His work seeks to place the everyday in societal, cultural, religious, and historical frames of reference.
Exhibited in multiple street and urban photography festivals, Anil sees image making as a way to make sense of his immediate milieu, a window into humanity going about its way, often framed in unguarded moments that speak of their times.
Here, Stairway frames an urban space where people step off the street and instantly enter a place sacred to their pursuit of the spiritual. The light frames the short ascent, closing them off to everyday exertions before leading them to a divine presence in the temple where they momentarily shed their burdens at the altar, surrendering to a presence greater than their own.
