The Southeast Museum of Photography (SMP) exhibits, collects, preserves, and interprets photography to facilitate teaching and learning at Daytona State College, and enhances the community's understanding and appreciation of culture, history, art, and photography.
SMP is one of only 13 dedicated photography museums in the nation. SMP presents more than eight exhibitions annually. Through these many exhibitions, the museum creates meaningful connections through interdisciplinary themes that include - but are not limited to - science, humanities, performing arts, geography, and culture. There is something in store for everyone to connect with and learn from when visiting the museum’s galleries. Within its permanent collection, SMP also owns 4,700 images. These range from early processes dating back to the late 1800's, through many contemporary images by prominent photographers in the field today. The collection includes representative works from every major photographic process and the developments within those processes, including tintypes, daguerreotypes, albumen prints, cyanotypes, gelatin silver prints, and C-prints.
SMP is closely involved with academic and community programs at our college. Since its opening in April 1992, the museum has hosted more than 300 exhibitions and produced dozens of catalogues and publications. Every summer the Southeast Museum of Photography is honored to showcase the work of recent graduates and takes pride in offering the rare opportunity for up-and-coming photographers to show their photographs in a museum. Thesis & Departures is an annual exhibition that highlights the photography and portfolios of these students of the Southeast Center for Photographic Studies at Daytona State College and The University of Central Florida’s Bachelor of Science in Photography. Starting 2024, Studio Arts participated in this annual student show.
Each semester, the museum offers films, lectures, seminars, and other events in conjunction with exhibitions currently on display. The museum also provides valuable academic enrichment to students, offering guided tours for a wide range of college and high school classes. Public programs feature internationally known photographers, critics, writers, and scholars.
Visitors to the museum and participants in our programs are frequently leaving comments such as “I really love the SE Museum of Photography!!! Great people + great programming,” “Excellent informative event,” “I love the museum and come whenever I can,” “Have thoroughly enjoyed the entire series. Thank you, “etc.
The museum offers Daytona State College students opportunities for internships and professional training, such as the work study program that gives students experience in daily museum operations, and the annual Gary R. Libby Scholarship, which allows one chosen student to spend a semester conceptualizing, curating, and installing a community exhibit at the News Journal Center. Many of the museum's former student workers are now employed in museums and galleries around the world.
For more information about exhibitions, programs, and events, please visit SoutheastMuseumofPhotography.org or call (386) 506-3894.
SMP is located on Daytona State's Daytona Beach Campus, 1200 W. International Speedway Blvd., in the Mori Hosseini Building (Building 1200).
We look forward to welcoming you to the Southeast Museum of Photography!
