DEPARTURES: 2020

July 22 - September 18, 2020

Departures is a juried exhibition that highlights photography by recent graduates of the Daytona State College photography program. This is the fourteenth year that the Southeast Museum of Photography has had the honor of showcasing the work of these recent graduates and it will continue to be a yearly summer event at the museum. Since the program’s inception over 50 years ago, Daytona State College Photography Program graduates have taken their place among the nation’s leading photographers. The program has since grown into one of the largest, most comprehensive commercial photography programs in the Southeastern United States. The challenges of a rapidly changing aesthetic and commercial environment have been met by dynamic programs that stress the fundamental aspects of photography, the highest level of technical proficiency and professional judgment, and give an understanding of the techniques, materials and equipment used in the profession today.

The photographers presented in the Departures 2020 exhibition at the Southeast Museum of Photography are worthy of praise. This exhibition is effectively a creative portfolio, one that reflects the uniqueness of each individual’s vision and the strength of the program at the Southeast Center for Photographic Studies. As the juror for this exhibition, I sought - and found - an abundance of technical skills, creativity, strong concepts and originality from each student.

In today’s world photography has become a new voice; a voice to share beauty, sorrow and hope. Each person has something equally important to say. In today’s social media outlets, photographs have unprecedented power. The power to bring hope to the hopeless, beauty to the ugliness, and justice to the broken. And photographs have the power to change lives - not only for the viewer, but for the photographer who takes them.

As we continue to press on in our craft - always willing to learn - we will find more of our true and authentic self. This will shape and form our photography. This takes patience and time. We all have unique gifts to share that will come through in our work as long as we keep seeking and are willing to grow and think beyond ourselves. Let us not waste this opportunity to share the gifts we have with the world.

Please join me in congratulating these young photographers for their accomplishments on these walls and offer encouragement on their journey ahead.
