DEPARTURES: 2023
May 2 - July 29, 2023
Departures is an annual juried exhibition that highlights photography by recent graduates of the Daytona State College photography program. This is the seventeenth year that the Southeast Museum of Photography has had the honor of showcasing the work of these recent graduates, and it will continue to be a yearly summer event at the museum. Since the program’s inception over 50 years ago, Daytona State College Photography Program graduates have taken their place among the nation’s leading photographers. The program has since grown into one of the largest, most comprehensive commercial photography programs in the Southeastern United States. The challenges of a rapidly changing aesthetic and commercial environment have been met by dynamic programs that stress the fundamental aspects of photography, the highest level of technical proficiency and professional judgment, and give an understanding of the techniques, materials, and equipment used in the profession today.
Departures 2023 has been juried by artist and educator Patricia Bambace.

LIST OF WINNING PROJECTS AND AWARDs:
1st Place: The Event: Phase Two - Jennifer Kinsey
This selection is so intriguing. It reminds me of a moment in a story where you don’t know which direction it will go next. This highly conceptual piece encourages the viewer to linger and discern for themselves where the plot might take them next. The lighting is beautifully done. This piece reminds me of something by Gregory Crewdson.
2nd Place: Polka Dot Dress - Angelica Martes
This work leaves us wondering about the subject. Where is she going, where is she coming from, who is she? The composition is well balanced. It feels very mundane, a woman walking through a parking lot, but the sheer act of photographing it adds importance to the moment. I imagine myself sitting in an office window looking down on her, wondering to myself where her life might take her.
3rd Place: Techno Logic #2 - Sonia Saini Simpson
This piece focuses on line, form, and light. An abstract study that keeps the viewer engaged and looking for more. The repetition and variation of balance throughout the frame make for an interesting artwork.
