DEPARTURES: 2022
May 3 - July 29, 2022
Departures is a juried exhibition that highlights photography by recent graduates of the Daytona State College photography program. This is the sixteenth year that the Southeast Museum of Photography has had the honor of showcasing the work of these recent graduates, and it will continue to be a yearly summer event at the museum. Since the program’s inception over 50 years ago, Daytona State College Photography Program graduates have taken their place among the nation’s leading photographers. The program has since grown into one of the largest, most comprehensive commercial photography programs in the Southeastern United States. The challenges of a rapidly changing aesthetic and commercial environment have been met by dynamic programs that stress the fundamental aspects of photography, the highest level of technical proficiency and professional judgment, and give an understanding of the techniques, materials, and equipment used in the profession today.
About the Juror
Brian Carlson
With passion, empathy, and a dash of humor I’ve been crafting stories through photography and film for over a decade. My work is honest and engaging and my extensive travel throughout the world has taught me how to interact with all kinds of people.
I work in the advertising and editorial spheres, photographing people from all walks of life. I pinch myself when I realize I get to take pictures for a living and the icing on the cake are the relationships I've cultivated along the way.
My wife and two boys are the pride and joy of my life. Nature, a good book, and time in my modest garden all give me rejuvenation. Small talk is alright but deep, meaningful conversation is where it’s at.
Statement from the juror:
Congratulations to the students included in this year's Departures 2022 exhibition. While jurying the selections, I found myself transported down memory lane, thinking back to my time at Daytona State College (then Daytona Beach Community College) while enrolled in the Southeast Center for Photographic Studies. I recall the confusing assignments, late nights in the darkroom (the smell of fixer never leaves you!), and candid critiques from fellow peers and professors. It was an exhilarating time, one that helped give birth to my love of photography and jumpstart my career.
At the beginning of their studies in early 2020, not a single student could have anticipated what was to come. However, they have persevered, and the proof is on the walls before you. Despite the pandemic, they've managed to create beautiful works that speak to each of their individual situations. There is much to admire in the precisely lit still lifes, evocative portraits, and peaceful nature scenes. Regardless of whether these new alumni choose to pursue a career in photography or simply enjoy as a hobby, I eagerly anticipate each of them serving as ambassadors for the medium. Their work not only raises the bar but exceeds the expectations we have for graduates of the Daytona Stage College program.
Photography is an ever-evolving platform through which we share our view of the world; there is always room for new visions and interpretations. You may use your camera to usher beauty into the world, reveal injustice, or as a tool for self-reflection. My advice is to keep your eye focused on what matters to you and pursue your dreams with intention. Whatever comes next, I wish each individual great success!
